Winners and Losers

During the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball tournament both University of North Carolina and Duke fans were spewing expletives, so much so that my son, Brad, left his seat to admonish the fans in his section. 

During a recent Virginia Tech basketball game fans used so many smutty and vulgar chants that VT coach "Buzz" Williams took a microphone to rebuke the fans.  

We can be elated when we win, but not scornful, nor mocking, nor hateful. 

When we lose we can be respectful, courteous and gracious toward our opponent. We can appreciate the efforts and commitment of the winners and let defeat spur us to improve our efforts.

Authentic winners embrace victory and defeat like noblemen and noblewomen. 

Of all the countless blessings bestowed upon me by Texas A&M University this remains vivid in my mind's eye: the Aggies are exuberant winners and magnanimous losers.

Through the years I have heard numerous admirable comments on the fans of Texas A&M for the respect and best wishes they offer toward their opponents. I have heard the same good reports about Nebraska fans. I'm certain there must be many other universities and colleges with the same admirable reputation. 

May all of us model our behavior on those who win with grace and lose with equanimity.
