Next Play

The race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11

College football fans know about the controversial referee ruling during the Texas A&M/Clemson football game September 8, 2018.

Texas A&M receiver Quartney Davis catches the ball at the Clemson 15 and heads toward the corner of the goal line. Clemson safety K'Von Wallace hustles in aggressive pursuit. Davis is thinking end zone. Wallace is thinking knock the ball out of bounds.

At the 4-yard line Davis leans forward and extends his arms with the ball toward the pylon. Wallace catches Davis at the 2 and knocks the ball out of bounds. The officials rule it a touchback. After a replay review, the call stands.

Clemson is given the ball with less than two minutes to play. The Aggies don’t quit. They stop Clemson, get the ball back, and score a touchdown with 46 seconds left on the clock. The attempt for a two-point play to tie the game fails. Clemson wins.

When asked about the controversial play in a postgame press conference Aggie coach Jimbo Fisher said that he thought that the play resulted in a fumble out of bounds, not a touchback.

And this is what he said next. Take heed. It is a message for all of us:

We can't whine over calls. That happens. That's football. They called it.... Next play. You play the next play. Don’t worry about the scoreboard. Don’t worry about momentum. Just play the next play. You control how you play the next play. That’s all you can control—the next play.

Hurricane threatens: next play—prepare for what’s coming. Hurricane destroys: next play—repair the damage. Heart attack: next play—get fit. Cancer: next play—fight to survive. Fail the exam: next play—study harder.

Life is filled with challenges. We only can respond to the ups and downs we encounter by asking ourselves: Is this something that is, or is not, in my control? Epictetus, Enchiridion

Whatever you find to do with your hands, do it with all your might. Ecclesiastes 9:10
